Choice of Life: Wild Islands from Upscale Studio is the latest entry in the card-based narrative-driven series. Your journey begins as a simple sailor who ends up caught in a pesky storm during your first voyage. The ship ends up wrecked on the reef, and with the whole crew dead, it’s now up to you to find a way to survive. Will you work up and save up as many supplies as possible? Or will you get lazy and not lift a finger, even if that will bring you closer to death? You’ll be earning a variety of titles as you progress further and further based on your actions. And with 180+ titles to grab and 300+ branching decisions, there’s certainly a lot of replay value in this one!
As soon as you boot up the game, you’ll get to make the first choice in the game as you find yourself on a ship: will you swab the deck and listen? Or will you take a moment to remember what happened the day before? The choices you make next will determine if you get to keep all of your health or if you start to lose some hearts. Talked back to the Captain? He smacks your ear and makes sure you don’t repeat that mistake. Make too many mistakes, and you’ll end up six feet under in no time!
Given the game’s nature, most of the time, you’ll only have to worry about using the left analog stick or the D-Pad to make choices along the way. As you’re presented with cards to choose from, you’ll have to highlight the one you want and press the X button to pick it. This will lead you down a specific story path that could end up blocking you from the other choices until you start a new run. The game will kindly let you know which cards you’ve picked before so that you can more easily select the other ones. Sometimes, you’ll move around a map as you choose between the available nodes to open up new choices to make.
Trophy-wise, this release features a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy waiting for you. The list will be split into 5 Bronze trophies, 16 Silver trophies, and 5 Gold trophies for you to work on. What are you going to have to do for that shiny Platinum trophy? Along with earning a variety of titles along the way, you’ll have to complete each of the story chapters while getting the different potential endings, which means you’ll need to reach specific scenarios thanks to your choices. This adds some replay value, which is certainly appreciated.
