With the massive success of the Super Mario Bros. film, it’s no surprise that Nintendo is pushing for more of its video game properties to hit the big screen.
While we already know a film based on The Legend of Zelda is in the works, it appears that Nintendo has another major property that’s about to receive the film treatment soon.

The Legend of Zelda Live-Action Film Has A Release Date
The news came from the new Nintendo Today app that was revealed at the latest Nintendo Direct.
As the title indicates, it’s a film based on the most famous video game ape of all time, Donkey Kong.
Donkey Kong Film In Development Outed By Registration
The date of recordation is mentioned as June 6, 2025, and the filing is by Nintendo Studios LLC, with Universal Pictures also mentioned. The registration is for “Untitled Donkey Kong Project; Motion picture,” which squashes any doubt about what this project is.
With The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossing over $1.3 billion at the box office with just a $100 million budget, Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination must be frothing at the mouth at the prospect of all the untapped Nintendo franchises that could earn billions for the companies.
A sequel to the Super Mario Bros. movie is in development and is scheduled for release in April 2026.

When it comes to the film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, its release has been delayed, with the new launch window set on May 7, 2027. That said, just like games, films often have their release dates changed, so don’t be surprised if this date is altered again.
While there are understandably no details available for the Donkey Kong motion picture, the character was voiced by Seth Rogen in the Super Mario Bros. movie, and it’s unknown whether Rogen will reprise this role or if it will even be connected to the Mario movie.
When it comes to games, Donkey Kong is about to star in his latest adventure for the Switch 2 titled Donkey Kong Bananza, which its producer denies was inspired by a Disney film.
