Dragon Quest 7 is, without question, one of the greatest RPGs on the PS1.
Unfortunately, it didn’t release in Europe until 2016, with the Nintendo 3DS’ excellent remake Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past.
Now there’s chatter of a new version being prepared for modern hardware, including the PS5.
MP1st claims to have seen “internal documents” which allude to the re-release, and it’s apparently planned to launch within the next year or so.
Certainly, it’d make some sense for Square Enix to bring this classic to contemporary consoles: it already released Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake last year, and Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is scheduled to deploy on 30th October.
The original report hypothesises that this could be a complete remake, but we’d be surprised if that’s the case. Square Enix put a lot of effort into the aforementioned 3DS version, and we reckon an upscaled version of that would probably suffice for most fans.
To be honest, we love the idea of these old Dragon Quest games getting re-releases. Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King is also an all-time classic – which also got a 3DS version in 2017 – so we hope if this Dragon Quest 7 rumour is accurate, that one follows.
It seems like it’s going to be a long wait for Dragon Quest 12, after all…
